#Fashiontips: how to wear a turtleneck sweater

Winter is almost here and again, it’s the evergreen time of the season: the turtleneck sweater. In various colours, fabrics and yarns, it has a great fit, hiding the critical points of the curvy masculine and feminine figures, while defining the waist and breast of slimmer women.

Even though it may be awkward to put on (the turtle neck may ruin hairstyles, so we suggest that it is always put on before applying makeup and doing your hair), it is practical and versatile, however not recommended for formal occasions.

The Italian name of turtleneck sweater, “dolcevita”, seems to derive from the famous film of Fellini La Dolce Vita, but this eclectic and particular model is also related to other socio-cultural circles of various Countries. As many other trendy articles, the turtleneck sweater was born in the first years of the 20th century with the only purpose to warm and protect without constraints to sailors' throats. Subsequently, always for the appreciated comfort, thanks to an English playwright, it also began to be worn by young Londoners to avoid wearing shirts with buttons and narrow tie knots. But, the true consecration of the turtleneck sweater in the world of fashion arrives in the Parisian existentialist and bohemian fifty’s. In that period the greatest personalities of art, music, literature and cinema, began to wear the classical model in black, allowing its identification as an icon of refined and alternative-chic style.

Nowadays, we can perceive certain uniformity between men and women wearing the turtleneck sweater. Wearing it with pants or jeans, in the office or for leisure, according to the material you chose, it can be worn under a jacket or on its own. In any case, it must be measured correctly: adherent and not tight, with the shoulder of the sweater perfectly lined up with that of the body

For a more contemporary and trendy style, it can be matched with a shirt, allowing a glimpse of the collar's points from the neck of the sweater.  However, attention must be paid to not confuse the turtle neck with the pullover: in fact it is better to avoid wearing shirts with the latter, adding scarves or foulards as an alternative.
